The minister was summoned to provide clarifications to the commission on “attacks” on September 7 – Brazil’s Independence Day – and “the escalation of violence by the extreme right”.

In the second round of elections, on October 30, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was elected with 50.90% of the valid votes, while President Jair Bolsonaro, who was seeking reelection, obtained 49.10%.

“These other things you said there are within a context in which many do not recognize the election result, and we are waiting for a solution for some things that were pleaded. They were normally ignored by the TSE [Tribunal Superior Eleitoral]by the Supreme Court [Supremo Tribunal Federal]and we are experiencing an odd situation in Brazil, which does not deserve comment now because it is not the reason for the summons”, replied the general.

Manifestations

When talking about the demonstrations on September 7, the head of the GSI assessed that they were democratic and controlled acts. “Fortunately, contrary to some pessimistic forecasts, the events of the 7th of September were very peaceful, conducted in a democratic manner, in a very controlled manner. Absolutely within the standards of a demonstration that takes place in any democratic country in the world.”
