Airspace, strategic for national sovereignty, faces the challenge of increasing its efficiency and safety for the transfer of passengers and goods, says a study by the Belisario Domínguez Institute (IBD) of the Senate.

The research titled Surveillance and protection of the Mexican airspace. Protection of national sovereigntyby Juan Pablo Aguirre Quezada, refers that different institutions of the federal public administration are empowered to carry out policies on issues such as safety, care for the environment and benefits to mobility, among others.

It highlights that the National Center for Surveillance and Protection of the Airspace stated: every 36 hours a security alert is reported in Mexico related to activities related to organized crime, false documentation, illegal transportation of hydrocarbons, or acts of corruption of public officials in the sector.

The study emphasizes that two initiatives and 17 points of agreement have been presented to the Congress of the Union, which seek to strengthen security measures, both for authorities and companies and, especially, the redesign of the routes that fly over the Valley of Mexico .

Other motions, he indicates, propose auditing the cancellation of the Texcoco airport and the construction of the Felipe Ángeles international terminal, as well as the request for the appearance of aeronautical authorities regarding recent incidents.

One of the problems of the Mexican airspace, the analysis delimits, is the evaluation carried out by the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States of America (FAA), and that among its results presented in May 2021 highlighted aspects related to the existing risks for security in the matter, and our country was placed in category 2, which has resulted in the impediment to create new air routes that promote business exchange with our main trading partner.

In this regard, the IBD document maintains that recovering aviation security category 1 will require that the Mexican authorities carry out actions that allow improving the conditions of quality and trust, in accordance with international standards and in the adequate time for the industry does not lose opportunities of a global nature.
