Edy Hernández, president of the company “The Carpia Tours”, said that since 2018 the company obtained the first license to observe the Humpback whales in the Miches area.

“Until now, we are the only company that has two licenses to observe these marine mammals in the Miches area,” he assured.

He explained that in costs of Miches are concentrated around fifteen Humpback whales and stated that this year the excursion will depart from the tourist dock of the municipality, departing from the 21st of this month, every day, from 9:30 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon.

“Since you tell a tourist about whales, they think of Samaná once and for all, but the truth is that we have a large concentration of whales in our area and we have been selling whales from Miches for three years. In fact, of 100 excursions that we do, maybe two or three percent go down to Samaná”, he stated.

He explained that apart from Montaña Redonda, which is one of the icons in tourist excursions in Miches, the second has been the observation of the Humpback whaleswhere it has caused great dynamism to tourism and the economy of the area.

He specified that this excursion is eagerly awaited year after year. “This has meant that when talking about excursions of the Humpback whales, the first thing they say is in Miches they also make them. Before they were made only in Samaná, then in Sabana de la Mar and also in Las Cañitas and, recently, we do it in Miches”, he stated.

During the whale season, Hernández explained that in this town, in 2018 and 2019, they received around two thousand to three thousand tourists, normally of French, Russian and German nationalities.

“Already in 2020 and 2021, due to the pandemic we are quite late, but we will see if this year we can finish the season well,” he said.
