This Wednesday the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) presented a report that compares the prices of the main supermarket chains in Montevideo and in the eastern resortsbased on the Consumer Price Information System (SIPC).
The survey took into account the chains with stores in Montevideo, Punta del Este, Piriápolis and Atlántida, which are Tienda Inglesa, Disco, Devoto and Devoto Express.
After the first half of January, in Punta del Este prices were found, on average, 7.4% more expensive than in Montevideo. To a lesser extent, this premium was already perceived in previous months. In December, the values were 5.5% higher than in the capital and, in November, 3.7%.
At the same time, the premium for the first half of January 2023 is 6% higher than that seen in the same month of 2022.

The highest premiums in Punta del Este were observed in the fruit and vegetable group (with 13.8% more than in Montevideo). It was followed by the group cleaning the home (7.9%) and personal care (7.5%).. Meanwhile, the food and beverages group —which also presented price differences— was the one that reflected it to a lesser extent (6.7%).
In Piriapolis
In this seaside resort the only chain present is Devoto and there the MEF verified that prices, on average, they are 4.7% higher than in Montevideo, only 0.1% more than in the first 15 days of December.
As in Punta del Este, Fruits and vegetables is the group of products with the highest average price premium (6.2%) in the first half of January. This is followed by the personal care group (4.8%) and food and beverages (4.6%). Meanwhile, household cleaning items are those with the lowest average premium (3.5%).

In the most visited resort on the Gold Coast, the premiums in relation to Montevideo are lower than in the cities mentioned above. In the first half of January the difference was only 1.9% more than in the capitalin December 0.4% and in November, 0.2%.
As in Punta del Este and Piriápolis, the group of fruits and vegetables presented the highest average premiums (3.1%) compared to Montevideo in the first fortnight of the year. Followed by personal care (2.4%) and household cleaning (2.2%). The group of food and beverage products presents prices 1.5% more expensive than in Montevideo.
