The Minister of the Interior, Louis Albert HeberHe said on Tuesday that “If I could have a bulldozer I would throw out module 10 and 11 (of the former Comcar), as well as the Canelones prison” because “they are not appropriate places to re-educate”.
“But it is what we have and we have to improve it, and to improve it we have to build new things.”pointed out the minister and contextualized the problems of overcrowding.
It was during an activity where the first anniversary of the sector of pre-egress located in Unit 4, in Santiago Vázquez, a sector that, as announced by the Ministry of the Interior, will be renamed “Dr. Jorge Larranaga”.
The minister reported that, in order to resolve the problem of overcrowdingthe portfolio will recover 500 places in Santiago Vázquez, before the end of 2022. In addition, the construction of a hospital with an inpatient service is planned, he said. “There is overcrowding, and we have to solve it quickly with construction (…) The works are to generate dignity. The dignity that is learned here is the dignity that is intended to be had outside,” said Heber.
The creation of the Pre-Egress Sector is part of the Prison Dignity Plan (2020-2025) that aims to improve the conditions of deprivation of liberty of the 14,400 prisoners in the country who are housed in the 26 penitentiary establishments. Its objective is to provide the inmate who is about to regain his freedom with a specific approach to his needs, the Ministry of the Interior reported in a statement.
