A group of women made up of lawyers, collectives and human rights activists appeared before the Attorney General’s Office to request an investigation into the case of the 8-year-old girl who was raped and pregnant and who recently gave birth.

Gilma de León, from the Foundation for Gender Equity, explained that her complaint seeks to open an investigation since she assures that the minor under 8 years of age was forced to give birth through a cesarean section. This investigation would include officials from the Ministry of Health, the Santo Tomás Hospital and the Children’s Hospital.

He argued that the fact of whether the current regulations on abortion were complied with, which in the case of rape in Panama is allowed, should also be clarified.

He said that it is necessary “to examine all the actions in the case of the minor who has been forced to give birth, we want a thorough investigation to be carried out to see if there was due diligence on the part of the officials”, assuring that opening an investigation would be a responsible action on the part of the authorities.

For her part, Samirah Armengol from the Cimuf organization said that this group of women requests more information about this case, since they feel that safeguarding the girl’s life was never thought of, which was a priority.
