GRC opens space to a new radio group with the sale of its station in Cancun

Group Radio Center, through its subsidiary Promotora de Éxitos and concessionaire of the XHPBCQ-FM 94.9 MHz frequency in Cancun, sold to that station to La Mera on the Beach, SA de CV, with which this company became a new radio group entering the sound broadcasting market in the country.

The operation was approved by the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) on October 6 and in this way, Promotora de Éxitos SA de CV transferred control of the station to La Mera on the Beach, although the new concession titles that account for this fact do not yet appear in the IFT’s registry of concessions.

The 94.9 MHz from Cancun had been acquired in 2017 by Promotora de Éxitos in the IFT-4 spectrum tender for new AM / FM radio stations, after offering a consideration of 86.5 million pesos, the highest offer that an interested party offered for a station of all the 191 frequencies that the IFT competed in that year throughout Mexico.

The IFT is authorized to cover a distance of up to 45 kilometers from its antenna to the XHPBCQ-FM and a power of 25,000 watts, enough to radiate to Isla Mujeres, Puerto Paraíso, Puerto Morelos or Holbox. The 94.9 MHz from Cancun It is the signal that can radiate further to the east of Mexico, because then there is the border with Cuba.

The station broadcasts today the musical and entertainment concept “Alfa”, and it is unknown if La Mera en la Playa will maintain the same programming after an agreement with Radio Centro or if it will place a new programming concept there.

According to documents from the Federal Telecommunications Institute, the company La Mera on the Beach, SA de CV is 99% controlled by businessman Rafael Felipe de Jesús Aguirre, who previously tried to buy other radio stations in the Caribbean.

The XHPBCQ-FM frequency was acquired by Promotora de Éxitos, owned by businessman Francisco Aguirre, who now sold it to his brother Rafael Felipe de Jesús Aguirre Gómez for an amount still unknown, but that Radio Centro Group could soon reveal in the financial reports that it periodically sends to the Mexican stock exchange (BMV).

For the Federal Institute of Telecommunications, the sale of the station between brothers does not imply an impact on the competition and concurrence of actors in the Cancun radio station, given that La Mera en la Playa, SA de CV is a new company in the sector and because Rafael Aguirre Gómez does not influence the decisions of the Grupo Radio Centro (GRC).

The portal In Frequency remembered that La Mera on the Beach, SA de CV in the past bid for stations in Puerto Morelos, Tulum and Chetumal, but the bidder Tecnoradio raised the economic bids too much and then Rafael Aguirre could not buy stations there. In those places, his other brother, Carlos Aguirre Gómez and former director of GRC, also beat him to the competition and won his own radio frequencies in the IFT-4 auction.

The sale of the 94.9 MHz in Cancun was approved at the IFT by the plenary session of five commissioners, through resolution P / IFT / 061021/493. La Mera en la Playa will be able to operate the station until June 26, 2037, when its validity expires.
