Pablo González Casanova is a figure in the field of the Mexican and Ibero-American academy, known in the world precisely for the importance of his contributions in this area, said the secretary general of UNAM, Leonardo Lomelí.

In the table Democracy in Mexicoorganized by the Coordination of the Academic Council of the Social Sciences Area (CAACS) in honor of the former rector, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, affirmed that the emeritus researcher is an emblematic figure of UNAM and of the social sciences, for the institutional construction that he carried out during his rectorship and that, without a doubt, was promising when pointing out the channels through which the academic reform of the institution passed in the last 50 years.

The creation of the Open University System is just one example, he said, while also highlighting that one of González Casanova’s most important books is Democracy in Mexico, published in 1965, which continues to be an important reference if you want to study the history and evolution of the Mexican political system.

The CAACS coordinator, Leticia Cano, stressed that the former rector is a university student committed to social justice and in solidarity with the struggles of indigenous peoples. In 2003, he was awarded the José Martí International Prize by UNESCO for his tireless defense of the identity of the peoples of Latin America.
