Gasoline prices skyrocket in the US

Washington, Mar 7 (Prensa Latina) Gasoline prices in the United States rose today to their highest value since 2008 due to pressure for the government to ban the import of Russian oil after the military operation launched by Moscow in Ukraine.

The average gallon of gasoline exceeded four dollars a gallon, a value similar to that reached 14 years ago when it reached 4.10 dollars, although in some places like California it amounts to five dollars.

It is a serious situation and it will not improve in the short term, it will probably remain that way for months, Patrick De Haan, head of analysis at the GasBuddy company, warned, quoted by The Hill newspaper.

The US government announced that it is actively discussing with its allies the possible veto on crude oil imports from Russia and the consequences of this decision for the market.

The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky, met virtually with some 300 members of the US Congress last Saturday and asked them to prohibit the purchase of oil from Russia, to which many legislators expressed their support and are willing to pass a law in that sense.

If accompanied by a sanction of this nature, the European Union would be more affected than the United States, which imports from the Eurasian nation only about 7.9 percent of its consumption.

However, to balance the global supply of hydrocarbons, the White House is entering into negotiations with other producing countries, such as Venezuela, according to the presidential press secretary, Jen Psaki.

Several media outlets reported that senior Washington officials traveled to Caracas to discuss, among other issues, “energy security,” despite the sanctions imposed on the Venezuelan oil sector.
