#FreeZone | The patience of Joe Biden

However, 2022 has been a whirlwind, a contender who would have him on the ropes in the box. Today the US president looks out of tune, tired, weak, with no political and economic control.

Biden suffers the largest inflation in his country, in modern history.

The popularity polls have collapsed for the president of the United States. According to a survey by the Center for Political Studies at Harvard University, seven out of 10 Americans do not want Joe Biden to try to renew his mandate.

The 79-year-old head of the US armed forces would only receive 30% support among Democrats in his own party’s primaries. Politically he is “fried”.

Faced with this difficult situation, Biden’s team has decided to undertake a new positioning strategy, precisely in what he is an expert: foreign relations.

On Tuesday, July 12, he received his politically more distant counterpart and with whom he has never been able to make that “click” that he is looking for so much. This is Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who finds Biden in this frankly vulnerable situation.

It was the second face-to-face meeting in eight months, the tension could be cut with a knife; the smiles looked forced and the little empathy was evident.

López Obrador was blunt: “Despite our differences and grievances that are not easy to forget over time, nor with good wishes, on many occasions we have been able to coincide and work as good friends and allies.” He called for a bold program to legalize thousands of hard-working immigrants in the neighboring country.

Biden asked for patience. “We will create more sources of work”, would be the summary of the entire message for his Mexican counterpart. He appealed to maintain a solid friendship – which has not existed between the leaders.

unsuccessful

Bilateral meetings that only seek photography – like the one that occurred in the White House – are usually unsuccessful. Good wishes, a good coffee and nice speeches, which finally do not have an important “closure”.

There are no concrete results for the eternal problems between the two nations. At the local level, presidents often harshly criticize each other. Biden has repeatedly said that Mexico has not made enough of an effort to eradicate immigration. AMLO said just a few days ago that freedom of expression in the United States was finished, for which he suggested removing the Statue of Liberty located in New York.

What happened on June 27 in San Antonio, Texas, when a trailer was found with 53 people dead and unconscious, sparked an international outcry and protest over the harsh immigration policies of the United States government, which have been possible with help from the Mexican government. Misfortune has both governments in the chair of the accused.

At the meeting, the victims were not mentioned. The numbers that the migratory crisis holds were not discussed: the record, more than 500,000 Mexicans who have arrived in the United States in the last year join the 51.5 million countrymen without papers.
