The USMCA will move forward because it is a very good business: Marcelo Ebrard

The USMCA will move forward because it is a very good business: Marcelo Ebrard

He recalled that the closing of the T-MEC negotiation was in very complex circumstances, and that should be the basis for the review that will be done in 2026, since it seems that there will also be Some difficulties .

“We are trained for that,” Ebrard said at the Global Business Council’s change of presidency event, where Alberto de la Fuente, president and CEO of Shell, passed the baton to Manuel Bravo, CEO of Bayer Mexico.

Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for president of the United States, has proposed that he will return industries to the United States that have left for Mexico and China, in addition to imposing tariffs on all their imports.

The former Mexican foreign minister pointed out that an effort must be made beyond trade exchange, and a vision of developing value chains and technological capabilities that respond to a new paradigm must be taken into account; there is a substantial change in geopolitics.

“We need to strengthen North American integration and increase the value of Mexican companies and the economy.”

He also said that work has already been done with the Republican Trump administration and mechanisms have been found to bring short- and medium-term objectives closer together.

For his part, the Undersecretary of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economy, Alejandro Encinas, said that the three economies (Mexico, the United States and Canada) are intertwined, so any protectionist measure can have adverse effects such as reducing the competitiveness of industries, increasing the cost of inputs and therefore the final prices paid by the consumer and generating disruptions in supply chains.

“We have to take on the challenge as an economic bloc, because isolated and unilateral measures will be insufficient,” said Encinas.

The new president of the global companies, Manuel Bravo, highlighted their contribution to the significant amount of foreign investment that has been captured during the six-year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, since of the 170,000 million dollars that are registered until 2023, 30% has been thanks to 28 companies that make up the Council and he assured that they still have a lot to contribute.

“Therefore, we will continue to bring to the table our ’20 ideas for Mexico’, proposing and promoting actions that not only strengthen our competitiveness, but also contribute to closing inequality gaps. We want to help build a nation with greater opportunities for all,” said Bravo, who will lead the Global Business Council until 2026.
