Fraud in the Army: Congressman Leonardo Soto calls on the Judiciary to extend the appointment of Minister Rutherford

Deputy Leonardo Soto (PS) called on the Judiciary to keep Minister Romy Rutherford in office. This, after the State Defense Council (CDE) requested the Supreme Court to renew the permanence of the judge, who has been investigating the millionaire fraud in the Army since 2017.

The possibility of the eventual extension arises from a legal norm promoted by the parliamentarian, which seeks the modification of article 51, third paragraph of the Code of Military Justice in terms of duration in the position of ministers and ministers of Courts of Appeals who integrate the Courts-Martial, thus being able to extend their period for 2 to 4 years.

Congressman Soto appreciated the work done by Rutherford and highlighted its importance in the investigation process. “The work of Minister Rutherford has been exceptional and fundamental to prosecute two former commanders in chief and more than 15 high-ranking officials involved in the most serious and massive corruption cases in the armed forces,” he said.

On the other hand, he recalled the importance of his permanence and what his exit from the investigative process could mean. “It is evident that putting an end to their judicial work would cause a setback in these investigations, considering the seriousness, breadth and complexity of the antecedents that have been collected, which would only favor the officers prosecuted for corruption,” he said.

Along the same lines, the parliamentarian insisted to the Judiciary so that Judge Rutherford was not removed and could continue in office. “We hope that the judiciary will be able to avoid any risk of impunity in these serious cases and continue to support the great work that Minister Rutherford has developed,” he concluded.
