Psychologist Gladys García explained that the Chroming Challenge represents a challenge that has been carried out since 2009 and that affects the health of young people after practicing dangerous activities, both physically and emotionally.
The “Chroming Challenge”, a challenge that has gone viral on social networks in recent weeks, represents a risk to the health of children and adolescents, and promotes self-harming behavior in those who practice this type of activities. This was expressed by psychologist Gladys García through a forum held by SuchWhich about these types of trends.
García explained that the challenge consists of participants carrying out several “dynamics”, including inhaling substances that are harmful to health and that may be present in aerosols and other products. The psychologist added that the Chrome Challenge It is not new, but has regained popularity after its rise in 2009.
On November 5, the authorities of the Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigation Corps (Cicpc) reported that more than 80 students from a school in Barinas were poisoned. Several teachers and health personnel were added to the figure, as well as students from another educational center in the Portuguesa state.
According to the statements of Cicpc officials, the beginning of the investigations pointed to the challenge as the cause of the poisoning and it was determined that it was the product of inhalation of a pink liquid, although the elements of the product are still unknown. Currently, a 14-year-old teenager is detained for the incident.
Psychologist Gladys García commented that carrying out these types of challenges can arise from a need for approval among young people and in some cases, due to the lack of conversations between parents and children to warn about the dangers of these practices on the health of themselves and their environment.
«We must do prior work with them (young people) in terms of self-knowledge, in terms of their strength, their deepest internal resources related to that capacity that we have to take care of ourselves and to learn to set limits when some situation causes us risk,” García added.
The specialist also indicated that several initiatives are being carried out in schools with the help of teachers and representatives to educate about the importance of not participating in these challenges.
García specified that in the event of any change in behavior in children and adolescents, one should talk to them and offer them confidence, as well as the necessary attention to any concerns about issues of behavior or influences.
«This type of measure also has to do with finding more spaces in which adolescents can be heard, young people who also need to express themselves in some way, who also need the guidance and accompaniment of adults, which is why it is so important that “Let us have articulated measures with very precise objectives for the formation of skills that promote self-care in young people,” said the psychologist.
The guest to the chat forum emphasized that the practice of challenges such as Chrome Challenge or the Blackout (a trend in which participants cause themselves to faint by holding their breath) not only cause momentary risks, but can cause severe complications in the body.
