The Brazilian electoral court reached this Friday the necessary majority to leave the former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro ineligible for eight years for “abuse of power”, while the vote of two judges remains, who could request a postponement of the end of the trial.
In this way, Bolsonaro will not be able to contest the next municipal, state government or President of the Republic elections until 2030, when he will be 75 years old. The decision can be appealed and does not imply criminal consequences for the former president of Brazil.
The Court considers that Bolsonaro committed abuse of power and improper use of the media on July 18, 2022 when he brought together several ambassadors from various countries to affirm, without providing evidence, that the electronic ballot boxes used in the elections could be the object of fraud. .

In addition, the judges have taken into account other statements by Bolsonaro and the environment he created that led his followers to attack the main government buildings in Brasilia on January 8 of this year in a coup attempt.
The political disqualification would leave Bolsonaro out of the 2026 presidential elections and could open a race for the leadership of the right in Brazil, for now without clear alternatives.
The fourth session of the trial began this Friday with the fifth vote, that of Judge Carmen Lúcia. Until then, three of the seven judges on the court had voted in favor of the conviction and one against. Lúcia’s approval was decisive, since the verdict is defined by a majority of the plenary session (at least four out of seven votes).
