Former political prisoners affirm that Ortega wants to continue “criminalizing” opponents

Through a statement, the Union of Nicaraguan Political Prisoners and Prisoners (UPPN) affirm that the end of Daniel Ortega’s dictatorship will only be achieved with the overwhelming support of all international human rights organizations and democratic countries in the world.

The former political prisoners point out that there is not even a show of will by the Ortega-Murillo regime to get out of the crisis that Nicaragua has been experiencing since 2018, rather “it continues to criminalize the exercise of human rights and perpetuate impunity, which will never be the way forward.” peace”.

Opponents called on democratic states to exert pressure to “attend the cry for freedom of the families of political prisoners and to continue demanding a democratic change with justice that respects human rights in Nicaragua.”

«The victims of the crimes of the Ortega-Murillo; including the more than 180 current political prisoners, where more than 40 recaptured appear; we deserve full justice and the end of the dictatorship, violence and oppression”, emphasizes UPPN.

They emphasize that “-without justice there will be no peace in Nicaragua and the cycles of violence that have not allowed true prosperity for our country will continue to be repeated.”

They join the demand for freedom

Regarding the demand of the relatives of political prisoners who advocate the immediate release of captive opponents, UPPN assures that “it accompanies the suffering and cry for freedom of all political prisoners of the cruel dictatorship that exists in Nicaragua.”

“As an organization of direct victims born from arbitrary arrests, we are voices in resistance that keep alive the demand for full justice with memory that guarantees the non-repetition of crimes against the people,” they concluded.

Former politicians demand “strong support” from the international community for the end of the Ortega dictatorship

Recently, a group of relatives of 70 political prisoners insisted on the need for a “constructive meeting” in Nicaragua with the rulers, the active forces of the nation and the Catholic Church so that “the necessary foundations for common well-being” are forged. .
