First Cuban Congress of Botany, from this Saturday in Havana

With the assistance of a hundred delegates, this Saturday will begin in Havana the First Cuban Congress of Botany.

The appointment will be marked by the “trend to establish alliances with related national groups,” he says a report of the Cuban News Agency (ACN)according to which the congress will take place at the Iberostar Hotel Parque Central, in the Havana city.

Alejandro Palmarola, President of the Cuban Botanical Society (SOCUBOT) and the event’s organizing committee, told the media that the event’s agenda includes “a considerable number of topics,” among which he mentioned agroecology, plant biotechnology, collections botany and ecotourism.

In addition, during the sessions of the congress, which will last until next Monday, there will also be discussions on environmental law and education, the teaching of botany, the management, conservation and restoration of biodiversity, floristics, landscaping and urban trees, among other issues, according to the report.

Similarly, as part of the event program, the XXI Flora Workshop of the Republic of Cuba and the Annual Meeting of the National Network of Botanical Gardens of Cuba will be held, confirmed Palmarola.

According to the specialist, the scientific sessions will be dedicated to “evoking the work of scientists Johannes Bisse (Germany 1935-1984) and his wife Lutgarda González Géigel (Cuba 1948-2006), who stood out for their work in the training of Cuban botanists” .

As a previous activity, this Friday the Iberostar Parque Central Hotel itself hosts the meeting of the Group of experts on Cuban plants, of the Commission for the supervision of species, belonging to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, confirms the ACN.

According to the agency, SOCUBOT is a non-governmental association established in 1988 that currently groups 545 Cuban specialists and promotes its First Congress in collaboration with the National Botanical Garden, the Environment Agency and the Institute of Ecology and Systematics.

This appointment, in addition, “lays the organizational foundations” for the celebration in Havana, in 2023, of the XIII Latin American Congress of Botany, adds the news release.
