This disease is only transmitted between animals and not from animals to people, so it does not represent a danger to the population
The president of the National Federation of Cattlemen of Venezuela (Fedenaga), Luis Prado, asserted that foot-and-mouth disease “makes it difficult” to export Venezuelan cattle, since the country remains the only one in Latin America where cases of it are still reported. this sickness.
He recalled that in 2020 the Venezuelan Animal Health Service Foundation was created, made up of three trade union organizations, including the one he represents, in order to achieve the eradication of the zoonotic virus through vaccination in the national herd.
Prado assured that during the year 2021 Venezuela was the fourth exporting nation of bovine cattle in the world with some 280,000 heads. However, in 2022 “no exports occurred.”
The trade unionist believes that once they manage to combat foot-and-mouth disease, locally produced meat products will have a presence in more competitive markets, because they will be able to obtain the “foot-and-mouth disease-free country” certificate.
In 2018, the then president of the Federation of Cattlemen of the Lake Basin (fedelago), Gerardo Ávila, pointed out that to eradicate the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic that affected the national herd at that time, at least 10 million vaccinations were required.
The country received donations from neighboring countries to stop the contamination of cattle. The same Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) sent a letter to the National Institute of Integral Agricultural Health, an entity attached to the Ministry of Agriculture and Land, to inform that the 18,820,000 donated doses should be distributed free of charge to small, medium and big producers.
In that same year in Colombia there was an epidemiological emergency of the disease that caused the closure of borders for the commercial exchange of animals and products that could transmit the foot-and-mouth disease virus.
It should be remembered that this disease is only transmitted between animals and not from animals to people, so it does not represent a danger to the population.
