FAN seized 5.3 tons of products that would go to maintain illegal mines in Amazonas

The FAN seized 5.3 tons of products, including food and other supplies, that were going to be taken from Colombia to the Amazon, specifically to illegal mines in the Yapacana National Park, according to the denouncement of the Ceofan chief.

The head of the Operational Strategic Command of the National Armed Forces (Ceofan), G/J Domingo Hernandez Larezreported that 5.3 tons of “logistical supplies” were seized that were being transported in a boat to the Yapacana National Park in the state of Amazonas.

Hernández Lárez indicated that the operation carried out by officials of the National Armed Forces (FAN) was carried out on the night of Thursday, May 25, when the boat that departed from Puerto de Inirida, in Colombia, was intercepted and that they were allegedly being taken to illegal mines in the vicinity of the national park.

The uniformed men seized four tons of chicken, 250 kilos of onion and potato; 10 boxes of beer and toilet soap; two packages of powdered soap, two boxes of bleach; five boxes of oil, 10 boxes of eggs, five packages of pasta, 100 kilos of mortadella, a bank of batteries for solar panels, a boat and an outboard motor.

In this sense, the head of Ceofan ratified that they will not allow illegal actions in the territory and especially in the Yapacana National Park in Amazonas, which may harm the environment.

On Tuesday, May 23, Hernández Lárez reported the arrest of four unidentified people linked to illegal mining in Bolívar state.

He added that in another operation, in the state of Amazonas, the FAN also dismantled 16 makeshift homes and disabled 12 engines, with hydraulic pumps, hoses, fuel and power plants, for the same purpose.

In mid-January, the Control Ciudadano association stressed that military operations in the area do not stop environmental destruction.

The environmental organization SOS Orinoco denounced the Thursday 2 March that in the Yapacana National Park, located in the state of Amazonas, 3,200 hectares have been “deforested and poisoned with mercury” by illegal mining.

In the same way, SOS Orinoco assures that in the area there are 86 gold extraction machines on top of the tepuy and that this illegal business is carried out with the approval of the government of Nicolás Maduro and, previously, of Hugo Chávez, with the consent of the Venezuelan military and the Colombian guerrilla. He also states that this is “the national park most affected by mining in Venezuela.”
