Liberoff sent separate requests for reports to the Ministries of Tourism, Economy and Environment to “know the information, which is refusing to provide clearly, on the situation of the Uruguayan tourism sector, and the meager support from the government.”

The Frente Amplio legislator states that according to reports from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the National Emergency System (SINAE), tourism in Uruguay “lost 2,800,000,000 dollars, during the health crisis caused by the Covid- 19”.

In this sense, Liberoff expressed that domestic tourism is a “fundamental bet to mitigate said impact”.

“Today exceptional support is required to support a vital sector for the country’s economy, and so far no specific information has been provided on the support provided, only general formulations,” he questioned.

Emergency Fund

For this reason, Liberoff proposes the creation of an Emergency Fund, temporary to 2025, of 50 million dollars, to boost domestic tourism, given a regional macroeconomic context that will not change until the end of 2024.

In this sense, the parliamentarian said that as a result of the complex regional and world situation, “Argentine tourists will not arrive in Uruguay as they did before, and those two million visitors are not replaced from anywhere.”
