The Ministry of the Interior reported on Friday, April 8, that in the first quarter of the year, homicides increased by 33.3% compared to the first three months of 2021, thefts increased by 3.2%, and domestic violence also increased, but at 11.2%.
However, robbery decreased 6.3% and cattle rustling decreased 16.3%.
Faced with such a panorama, different legislators from the left questioned the Minister of the Interior and demanded measures to reverse the situation.
Indeed, Senator Charles Carrera said that the increase in homicides in the first quarter of 2022 is a scenario that the Broad Front had been warning about since July 2021 and requires a minister who “leave triumphalism and Chicanas to take charge.” .
“The reports of robberies -without breaking them down- do not allow us to appreciate what open sources of information tell us: that in March they suffered an increase that accompanies the return to normality,” Carrera said.
The Frente Amplio legislator also said that the growth in reports of theft confirms “the return of social mobility, increasing opportunities for crime after the return of face-to-face work.” He stressed that the increase in domestic violence is also worrying.
nothing to celebrate
For his part, Senator Daniel Caggiani criticized the “obvious lack of political leadership in the Ministry of the Interior.”
For the parliamentarian, with the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC) in force and with the return of mobility “homicides, complaints of domestic violence and complaints of theft increased again in the first three months of the year”, for which he assured that “there is nothing to celebrate”.
