The line can also be purchased by tourists in any commercial unit of Etecsa, as reported.
The new service will only be available to those who present a foreign passport at the time of application.
The company also notified that for the use of the line in Cuban territory, the customer’s phone must be unlocked, and capable of operating on the frequencies 900 MHZ (3G), 2100 MHZ (3G) or 1800 MHZ (4G). .
The number of users who use mobile phone services in Cuba has grown in recent years, and has become an attractive source of divisive income for the island’s economy, through prepaid recharges contracted from abroad. .
However, this increase has been accompanied by constant complaints about the quality of the service, which has been affected, among other factors, by the lack of investment in the infrastructure necessary to support the high demand, according to the Cuban authorities in the sector.
The government of the island and the experts hope to reverse this situation with the set up of the new submarine cable of the Arimao Project, contracted to the French company Orange SA, which already connects Cuba with the neighboring Caribbean island of Martinique by fiber optics.
