In February, the Blackout Committee registered a total of 4,049 service interruptions, with the highest incidence in Zulia state, when in January at least 3,296 outages were documented throughout the country
the NGO Blackout Affected Committee registered that electrical failures in Venezuela increased by 22.8% in February compared to January, according to data provided this Saturday, March 18, to the news agency EFE.
According to the organization, in the month of February there were 4,049 service interruptions, with the highest incidence in the state of Zulia, when in January at least 3,296 cuts were documented throughout the nation.
In Zulia, the NGO documented 567 failures, followed by Mérida, with 289; Miranda, with 287; Tachira, with 277; and Apure, with 211 power outages.
The state that suffered the least number of outages in February was coastal La Guaira, with 88, followed by Sucre, with 98, according to the Committee for Blackouts Affected.
Venezuela suffers intermittent blackouts on a daily basis, lasting for more than 24 hours, especially in the interior states of the country, a problem that the Maduro government attributes to programmed attacks, mainly from the United States, and international sanctions.
Power failures and the mega blackout in Venezuela
On March 7, 2019, the largest and most important national electrical blackout in the history of Venezuela was recorded. The failure lasted in some states between five and seven continuous days.
It affected the country’s electricity sector in most of its 23 states and the Capital District, causing problems in hospitals, clinics, industries, transportation, and water services. In addition, multiple lootings were recorded, mainly in Zulia state.
On March 12, electric power returned in some regions of the country. But Caracas remained only partially shut down where it was restored as a national priority. While the western regions near the Colombian border remained in the dark. By March 14, power had been restored to much of the country, although power outages persisted for several days after that.
