Dollar rises to R$4.91 and reaches its highest value in three weeks

Dollar rises to R$ 5.52, and the stock market closes at the lowest level in a year

In a day of international nervousness, the dollar surpassed the barrier of R$ 4.90 and reached the highest value in three weeks. The stock market has fallen for the fifth time in a row and is at its lowest level in 20 days.

The commercial dollar closed this Thursday (9) sold at R$4.916, up by R$0.026 (+0.52%). The US currency alternated highs and lows throughout the day, reaching R$4.86 at the day’s low around 9:30 am. However, with the deterioration of the external market, the price gained strength towards the end of the negotiations.

The currency is at its highest value since May 19, when it closed at R$4.917. The currency accumulates a high of 3.43% in June. In 2022, however, the dollar drops 11.84%.

The day was also tense in the stock market. The B3 Ibovespa index closed at 107,094 points, down 1.18%. Influenced by the North American stock exchanges, which also had a strong fall, the Ibovespa operated lower throughout the session. The Brazilian stock market is at its lowest level since May 19, when it closed just above 107,000 points.

In the morning, the release of official inflation in May cooled the market. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) dropped to 0.43% last month. The data came lower than expected by financial analysts.

During the afternoon, however, the external scenario weighed again. Tomorrow (10), the United States will release the final consumer inflation index, which is at the highest level in 40 years. If the rate comes higher than expected, bets will increase that the Federal Reserve (Fed, US Central Bank) will tighten the interest rate readjustment in the largest economy on the planet. Higher rates in advanced countries encourage capital flight from emerging countries such as Brazil.
