The president of the College of Physicians of Aragua, Dr. Ramón Rubio, requested this Tuesday the 31st that the health authorities of that state carry out the necessary epidemiological and phytosanitary investigations to confirm or rule out an alleged outbreak of salmonellosis in El Castaño and surrounding areas.
Spokesmen for the communal council of El Castaño assured the newspaper the century that to date two adults and two minors have died, with confirmed salmonella tests. They believe the outbreak is due to contaminated water.

Dr. Rubio, being consulted by journalists, said that “it is good to give an answer to the relatives and those affected by this symptomatology (…) I know that they are already working, but it is necessary that the community be informed in a clear and concise manner and that the doctors and nurses of these zones”.
The doctor pointed out that at least 10 people with symptoms of fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea with blood and mucus have been transferred to the José María Benítez hospital, located in the town of Victoria.
“Some have required hospitalization and others have even required surgical operations, from the abdominal point of view to do explorations and see if the cause was purely surgical (…) There has been talk of various pathologies from the intestinal point of view, such as salmonellosis, Produced by a bacterium that can generate all these symptoms,” he said.
The doctor also asked the population to avoid misinformation and wait for the authorities to confirm or rule out any disease. He assured that the public and private system can attend to the contingency. “When the population is aware, it is much easier to face any type of health threat.”
Salmonellosis is one of the most common gastrointestinal infections in the world, and is generally spread by contaminated food or water.
In general, people who have salmonellosis do not have symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic. Others manifest diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps within eight to 72 hours. “In some cases, the diarrhea associated with salmonella infection can be dehydrating to the point of requiring medical attention. Life-threatening complications can also occur if the infection spreads beyond the intestines.”
Dr. Ramón Rubio recommended to the population that, if they have any of these symptoms, they go to the nearest doctor or health center to determine any disease. He also requested that talks be held on good food management and water purification to raise awareness among the population.
The last officially reported outbreak of salmonellosis in the country occurred in August 2021 in Anzoátegui statewhere two deaths and more than 500 infected people were registered.
