The Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Foundationsdemanded this Saturday the “full release” of its general director, Javier Tarazona, who has been detained for nine months in the vicinity of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin), after being arrested in July 2021 and accused of “terrorism, incitement to hatred and betrayal of the country”.
“Today, April 2, our general director, Javier Tarazona, celebrates nine months of arbitrary detention. A few days ago, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, expressed concern about her case. We demand their full release,” Fundaredes posted on Twitter.
On March 17, Bachelet presented an oral update on the case of Venezuela in which she was “concerned about the prosecution of members of the Human Rights NGO Fundaredes; two of its members have been released on parole, but continue to face criminal charges.”
The activist was arrested along with his brother Rafael Tarazona and the lawyer Omar de Dios García, “without mediating arguments, procedural instruments or a court order,” says a report published by the organization.
The arrest of the representatives of FundaRedes occurs in the midst of filing a complaint with the Public Ministry for harassment and persecution by police officers, Sebin agents and unidentified individuals, in the city of Coro.
García and Rafael Tarazona were later released under the presentation regime.

The freedom of Javier Tarazona, considered the main voice of denunciation in the conflict unleashed last year in Apure state, bordering Colombia, between the Armed Forces and FARC dissidents, was requested by various human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International (AI).
In December, AI issued an “urgent action” regarding the case in which it classified the activist as a “prisoner of conscience” for “having been arbitrarily detained for his work in defense of human rights.”
