Cuba runs out of workforce

Havana Cuba. – The abandonment of technicians and workers in the industries and the lack of workers in agriculture show the deterioration of the tax capacity and the credibility of the Government, while they distance Cuba’s economic recovery.

The intellectual and productive labor forces essential to emerge from the destruction in all spheres of the economy are very scarce in Cuba. Internal emigration mainly to Havana comes from the extremely poor areas in the coffee-growing mountains of Oriente, the bateyes of the sugar mills, the dismantled sugarcane fields and the cattle-raising areas of Camagüey.

Cubans today, plunged into economic and productive chaos, with the urgent need to rebuild, cannot imagine the secular industriousness of the population and the riches of this land. Even knowledge accumulated during the post-1960 push for literacy deteriorates or slips away.

In the sessions of the National Assembly of People’s Power held from July 21 to 24, the insufficient labor force was a recurring issue to justify non-compliance. During the analysis of the information offered by Eloy Álvarez, Minister of Industries, Deputy Edel Álvarez referred to the exodus of qualified personnel to other sectors and the importance of drawing up strategies that achieve the permanence and preparation of qualified technicians and workers.

In the presentation of Liván Arronte, Minister of Energy and Mines, Deputy Miguel García Fransuá expressed his concern about the exodus of workers from the sector, especially low wages. In several television reports related to the thermoelectric problemspeople interviewed have raised the loss of experienced workers for this reason.

Vice-premier Alejandro Gil also expressed that the delays in the execution of investments are affected by the labor force deficit. However, he pointed out that the functionality of the budgeted sector will be optimized, since it does not respond to the levels of economic activity in the country. That will involve job relocations. As on previous occasions, they will probably put pressure on people to apply for usufruct land, use it for agricultural work and construction.

In agriculture, the lack of labor has made planting and harvesting difficult for years, with notable difficulties in carrying out the 2022-2023 harvest.

The disbandment of more than 20 notable athletes this year denotes the deterioration of the Government in a sector prioritized by Fidel Castro and closely supervised by State Security. July 26 he ran away in Miami the discus thrower Yaimé Pérez, flag bearer of the Cuban delegation and bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics. She had been preceded by javelin thrower Yesenia Ballar and the team’s physical therapist sent to the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
