Banks in Mexico had a satisfactory performance in 2021: SHCP

In the annual evaluation of their performance, 49 of 50 banks operating in Mexico obtained a satisfactory result in 2021, reported the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP).

Deutsche Bank it is the only one that registered an unsatisfactory result. However, it is worth mentioning that since 2015, the withdrawal of the German bank’s operations in Mexico was announced, and in 2016 its sale was decided, however the operation was canceled in 2018. In 2020, the sale was reported of its fiduciary business to the Mexican CI Banco.

According to information from Deutsche Bank, at the end of the first quarter of 2022, it continued with its process of evaluating the strategic alternatives for its remaining operations in Mexico, while continuing to lend some customer services and complying with regulations.

It recently emerged that the American Citi Group -which is in the process of selling Banamex but will remain in the country with its wholesale banking business- would be looking to buy what remains of Deutsche Bank in Mexico, in order to speed up processes.

The report of the SHCP highlighted that, after the performance evaluation, the banking system in Mexico maintains a solid and resilient position. “Of the 50 multiple banking institutions that make it up, 49 obtained a satisfactory rating,” he explained.

The agency highlighted that both 43 banks with more than five years of operation, as well as 6 with less than that period, showed a satisfactory performance in 2021. The latter are: KEB Hana, S3, Shinhan, Mizuho, ​​BNP PAribas and Bank of China.

Support productive forces and economic growth

Treasury recalled that the evaluation of banking performance -which it has been carrying out since 2015-, aims to promote that this type of institution direct its activities to support and promote the development of the country’s productive forces and the growth of the national economy, in accordance with healthy banking practices and uses, this , he pointed out, based on a sovereign economic policy.

Similarly, it seeks to promote savings in all sectors and regions of the country, and its proper channeling to a wide regional coverage that promotes the decentralization of the banking system itself.

To this end, the evaluation of banking performance considers aspects such as: intermediation related to the credit activity and fundraising; and the products, services and infrastructure through which they carry out their operations.

Likewise, the quality of the services in the operation of the institutions, and the performance in investment and foreign exchange activities, among others.
