Conatel opens proceedings against Lara's television channel for "ignoring" Maduro

The regional media, which spoke in a video saying that what happened was “a human error” and that it was corrected on air, has ten business days to file the allegations and five days to “oppose the precautionary measures of the procedure.”


The National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) opened an administrative procedure to PromarTVa television channel in the state of Lara, after this Friday, October 7, the operator made an error in its character generator when identifying Nicolás Maduro as “interim president” and not as “president of the Republic.”

In a statement, the regional government reported that it made the request to open an investigation against the regional television station for “ignoring the highest legitimate authority in our country.”

“From the Government of Lara we ratify the protection of our President Nicolás Maduro against any act that threatens his ignorance as the Venezuelan Head of State,” the letter highlighted.

A Conatel official visited the headquarters of PromarTV with an official letter announcing the start of the sanctioning procedure for having transmitted “messages omitting objective obligations that result in administrative offenses”, contemplated, according to the official version, in article 29 number 1, literal h of the Law of Social Responsibility in Radio, Television and Electronic Media”.

Given this, the agency assured that the media has “guaranteed” its right to defense and due process and that they also have ten business days to submit allegations and five days to “oppose the precautionary measures of the procedure.”

PromarTV, to Through a video broadcast on her social networks, she assured that what happened during the main newscast on Friday, October 7, was due to a human error, “an unforeseen and involuntary situation”, which, in addition, the reporter corrected on air, mentioning the Nicolás Maduro’s “correct” position.

“We are sorry for what happened. We assure you that we are strengthening our processes, because we have been and will continue to be a communication window for all sectors, strictly adhering to regulations and laws. We work as a team to continue contributing to the country’s development,” said the operator’s president, Jorge Kossowski.

“It is a propitious occasion to remember that PromarTV it is distinguished by its respect for democratic institutions,” added the outlet.

In September alone, Conatel suspended 16 stations, most of them from Zulia state and Sucre. But the outlook for the media is even worse. In recent years, according to Medianalisis, the regulatory body has closed more than 200 stations, following in the footsteps of “Nicaragua”.
