Three Colombian tourists and a Peruvian deceased, as well as a Spaniard, a Canadian, a French and a Greek in a very serious condition, is the balance left by the overturning of a tourist minivan into a ravine on the Cusco – La Convencion road.
The unfortunate fact set off the alarms in Cusco and even at the national level, since for some time now the local roads have witnessed an infinity of vehicular accidents, that add up to the moment 124 people deceased between tourists and nationals.
According to Colonel PNP Julio Becerra, head of the Divincri Cusco, to date there have been 106 traffic accidents on the roads of the region, of which the majority occur due to speeding, others due to the driver’s incompetence and even due to pedestrians.
These figures show that very few accidents develop due to weather or road conditions, being the hand of man the main cause of accidents.
MINISTERS
About the fact they arrived to Cusco the Ministers of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Robert Sánchez, and of Defense, José Gavidia, who verified the conditions of the surviving passengers, who were referred to different clinics in Cusco.
The head of Foreign Trade and Tourism, cited that in a communication with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the details about the repatriation of the bodies of the deceased are adjusted, while waiting for a quick and fair investigation of the fact.
Meanwhile, the head of the Defense portfolio indicated that a Spartan plane from the Armed Forces could arrive in Cusco to help injured passengers, however, the critical condition of some of them would prevent them from being transferred for the time being. He also mentioned that they will make a helicopter available to take the bodies from the Quillabamba morgue to Cusco and later to Lima.
TRACK IN POOR CONDITION
After knowing about the accident, from all fronts they complained about the terrible state of the Cusco – Quillabamba road, especially the Abra Málaga sector, where the accident was recorded, where the speed bumps, holes and cracks make driving through the area more than complicated.
In this regard, the regional governor of Cusco, Jean Paul Benavente, pointed out that the intervention of said highway section is not within the jurisdiction of his institution, but from national Provias, making a call for the total reconditioning of this track.
“The paved road Cusco – Quillabamba (La Convencion) is transcendental for the tourist development of the region. In this context, we demand that the Ministry of Transport and Communications carry out the improvement of the infrastructure and the signage of this road that allows the transit of approximately 200 thousand visitors a year”he referred.
INJURED AND DECEASED
In the first instance, the number of injured and deceased that the accident caused was unknown, however now the authorities have already been able to verify the names and nationalities, preparing the following list:
