Colombia signed an environmental pact for the oceans

Nine American countries, including Colombia, signed a environmental pact for the conservation of the region’s oceans, in an initiative that was promulgated at the IX Summit of the Americas, which takes place in Los Angeles.

Specifically, the countries that make up this new American alliance are Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, United States, Costa Rica, Peru and Panama.

United in this initiative is to endorse the agreement we signed in Glasgow for the protection of our marine areas. Once again, in the spirit of multilateralism and the Summit, we signed this initiative because we have to continue adding more countries and more forces for this defense. (…) In the name of this brotherhood we take another historic step in the protection of the oceans”, said the president of Colombia Iván Duque after signing the pact.

Among the contents of this agreement are: the establishment of a network of interconnected marine protected areas; the promotion and cooperation between these systems and the creation of marine protected areas in underrepresented areas.

We believe that we are taking a step forward (…) Do not take this initiative as something extra or of secondary importance, it is a fight for survival. The oceans play a crucial role in the face of the effects of climate change. If we want to fulfill the Paris commitments and be able to demand from other countries, we have to set an example by protecting our vast coastlines”, said the president of Chile Gabriel Boric.
