Bob Menéndez: AMLO tried to blackmail Biden to invite “dictators” to the Summit

MIAMI, United States.- Senator Bob Menéndez accused this Thursday the president of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) of trying to “blackmail” President Joe Biden to invite several authoritarian regimes to the IX Summit of the Americas, according to reports USAToday.

Menéndez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, accused AMLO of siding with “dictators and despots” by skipping the summit because Biden refused to invite Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

“I think that President López Obrador basically tried to blackmail President Biden into insisting that countries that are not democratic, countries like Venezuela, Cuba, Daniel Ortega’s Nicaragua, that are dictators and despots, should have been invited to the summit,” Menéndez said during an interview Thursday.

Joe Biden excluded the three countries from the Summit, which takes place this week in Los Angeles, California, because “we don’t think dictators should be invited,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday. .

The White House’s refusal to invite totalitarian regimes to the event caused several leaders in the region, including López Obrador, to decide to boycott the high-level meeting.

According to USA Today, Menéndez’s reply came after AMLO criticized him this Wednesday during a press conference, as well as Republican senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, for United States policies towards Cuba.

AMLO, who mentioned Menéndez by name, accused the senators of having resentment and “hatred” towards Cuba.

López Obrador’s decision not to attend the summit was a major snub for Biden, “since the two countries must work together on important policy issues, such as trade and migration,” the article reads.

During his opening speech at the Summit, Biden highlighted the importance of democracy in the Western Hemisphere.

“Democracy is a hallmark of our region,” he said, adding that “at a time when democracy is under attack around the world, let us come together again and renew our conviction that democracy is not just the defining characteristic of Historias Americans, but the essential ingredient for America’s future.”
