Colombia, seeking to be the main partner of the United Arab Emirates

President Iván Duque agreed on Saturday with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohamed bin Zayed, in Dubai the establishment of an operations center in Colombia, to make it the main commercial partner of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in America.

“We discussed how to turn Colombia into the main commercial partner of the United Arab Emirates in America and we agreed to do so through the installation of a hub, which will guarantee more investment and jobs”, Duque explained on his Twitter account after meeting Bin Zayed, and de facto ruler of the UAE, at the Dubai Expo.

The Colombian president, who completed his second day of official visit to the rich Arab country, added that his interlocutor expressed interest in “promote investment, environmental projects and exchanges in innovation and technology”.

The official Emirati news agency, Wam, indicated that at the meeting, which took place in the Emirates pavilion at Expo2020, both leaders “They addressed friendly relations and the level of joint cooperation between the two countries as well as the possibilities of developing them in various aspects, especially investment, economy and tourism.”

Duque arrived in Dubai last Thursday, after a tour that took him to the United Kingdom and France, although he began his schedule of activities on Friday, with various interviews with local authorities, a forum with investors and a visit to the Colombian pavilion at Expo2020, coinciding with the country’s National Day at said event.

The visit of the Colombian president to the Arab country, to which he arrived accompanied by five ministers, has a marked economic nature and the main objective is to attract investment to his country and boost bilateral trade, which in 2019 reached 189.6 million dollars.

On Friday he assured that with so far in Expo, which was inaugurated on October 1 with a one-year delay due to the covid-19 pandemic, Colombia has already obtained investment commitments for more than 70 million dollars.
