Coast Guard detains four Cuban rafters who made landfall in Key West

MIAMI, United States. – Four Cuban migrants (adult men) were detained by US Coast Guard agents after making landfall in Key West, indicated this Saturday the US authorities.

The four Cuban rafters, who crossed the Straits of Florida on a commercial fishing boat, were intercepted by Coast Guard agents at 1:00 a.m. this Saturday.

Just last Tuesday, the Coast Guard repatriated 26 Cubans who were intercepted off the Florida Keys, according to the agency itself in a press release.

The group of Cuban migrants, who crossed the Straits of Florida in a rustic boat, was sighted last Friday at 12:15 pm about 15 miles southeast of Islamorada.

Given the rapid increase in cases of Cuban rafters, Petty Officer Nicole J. Groll, of the Seventh Coast Guard District, told relatives in the United States of Cuban migrants to contact their local representative if they need to know details about the identity of the rescued people.

According to the agency, the statistics have behaved as follows: 5,396 Cubans intercepted in fiscal year 2016; 1,468 in 2017; 259 in 2018; 313 in 2019; 49 in 2020 and 838 in 2021.

“Once aboard a Coast Guard patrol boat, all migrants receive food, water, shelter and basic medical attention,” the Coast Guard has indicated on other occasions.
