Former Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Carolina Achemade an appearance on social networks recently, after the news broke that the Minister of the Environment, Adrián Peña, had claimed to have a degree in Business Administration, when in fact he had not finished the race.
At first, Ache published a tweet in which he stated: “Hard with those below, lukewarm with those above.” With this statement, he was referring to the decisions made by his co-religionists, although he did not explicitly name them. An hour later, he tweeted again, but this time he made reference to the “rod” of ethics, an argument that Peña had used to justify that Ache had ended up disgraced by the case of the passport of drug trafficker Sebastián Marset. “They raised the ethical bar so high, that they go down,” she ironized.
Allusion to Adrián Peña
Ache published these messages after the weekly Search reported that Peña had obtained his university degree in 2022, but had held it since at least 2015: he signed some documents as a graduate. In addition, he had signed documents as a graduate in Business Administration, when in fact he was not, and he had also claimed to be one or had omitted to correct those who presented it that way.
Peña acknowledged the mistake and claimed to have discussed the issue with the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, who supported him. “The first thing that interests me to clarify is that it is a race that I competed at the time. This was many years ago, and what remained pending was the defense of the thesis. Years passed, I dedicated myself to private activity and later to political activity. I never defended that thesis. Yes, I was interested in doing it lately to complete this cycle and I finally approved the defense of the thesis”, justified the minister.
Ache’s tweet generated dozens of comments, including that of Carlos María Uriarte, former Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, who took office in 2020 supported by former Foreign Minister Ernesto Talvi, the founder of Ciudadanos who resigned from the Foreign Ministry and from political activity. . “Justice takes time, but it always comes,” said the former minister.
On the other hand, given the possibility of being investigated for her intervention in the granting of the passport to Marset, Ache appointed Jorge Díaz, a former court prosecutor, as defense attorney, who this Thursday also referred to Peña’s “error”.
