The Foreign Minister, Francisco Bustillo, held a meeting, this September 8 in Berlin, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Annalena Baerbock. After the meeting, they underlined the good relations between Mercosur and the European Union, as well as the bilateral relations between both nations. The chief expressed that the current international situation represents an opportunity for an agreement between the blocks.
Bustillo stressed that the particular moment that the world is going through finds Uruguay and Germany working for peace. He said that at the meeting they discussed the concerns of both countries in relation to environmental issues and the use of green hydrogen as an energy alternative. Likewise, he pointed out that the two nations are an example in terms of dealing with problems related to climate change, with an emphasis on future generations. “We have an obligation to give them a better world than the one we inherited”he reflected.
Meanwhile, Baerbock said that despite the distance, there are common concerns around different issues. In this sense, he highlighted Uruguay’s position of condemnation of the war in Ukraine.
He mentioned that his country could take the Uruguayan experience in relation to the energy transition, which implies that more than 90% of production originates from renewable resources. He added that this policy allows visualizing alternatives to face the current crisis. In this regard, he assured that Germany plans to expand its collaboration in this sector, especially through strategies with green hydrogen.
He also pointed out the management of cannabis by the Uruguayan State. He also announced that his country plans to strengthen and expand relations with Latin America, especially in the economic field.
Bustillo visited Europe on an official mission as part of the negotiations for the final ratification of the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, within the framework of the exercise of the presidency pro tempore of the American bloc by Uruguay.
