The Nonguen National Parkprotected wild area administered by the National Forest Corporation (CONAF)has unique characteristics that have transformed it into one of the tourist spots of the Bio bio region and in an area of high conservation interest.
And it is that this unit considers a large part of the Nonguén estuary basin, which in turn corresponds to a sub-basin of the Andalién river; one of the most important coastal basins in the region.
In addition, it has the last important fragment of the so-called “Deciduous Forest of Concepción”not represented in any other wild area belonging to the National System of Protected Wild Areas of the State.
“This national park is inserted in a highly fragmented landscape, due to the forest and urban matrix, protecting a relevant remnant of the deciduous forest of Concepción, and housing species classified as Endangered such as the pitao and the Araucanian michay, as well as also to more than one hundred species of vertebrates, including amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The high ecological value of this area presents a permanent challenge for Conaf to ensure its protection.”
“In that sense, “the work of monitoring its native fauna, which we carry out with camera traps, is vital, since it allows us to monitor its state of conservation and also verify the evolution of the threats that lie in wait for it”explained the regional head of the department of Conaf Protected Areas, Alberto Bordeaux.
During the last monitoring carried out in the national park, which considered the period between October last year and January 2022, it managed to capture a total of 28 thousand photographs, and identify twenty-one species of fauna in them, complementing the images of previous years, and registering, for the first time, a quique (Galyctis cuja), partridge (Nothoprocta perdicaria) and the carpenter (Picumnus cirratus), added to new photos of pups of Andean fox and of pudú.
Alberto Bordeaux added that, along with the beautiful photos of pudú, güiñas and foxes, “Unfortunately, the entry of domestic animals continues to be registered, which become threats to native species, such as dogs and cattle, with dogs being the most worrying species, since most of the registered specimens correspond to neighbors’ pets. from the park. That is why we are going to reinforce the work with our neighbors, in order to make them aware of the importance of being more careful with their pets so that they do not wander around the unit and do not affect the habitat of native species.”
In a new commemoration of Earth daythe regional director of Conaf, Rodrigo Jaramaintained that the work carried out by the Corporation in the Nonguen National Park it is “fundamental in the path of protection and conservation of Chile’s environmental heritage, and where we all have a role as citizens in respecting our natural environment, living in harmony with nature.”
For its part, the SEREMI of Agriculture, Pamela Yanezhighlighted that “The Government of President Gabriel Boric, through the Ministry of Agriculture, asks to advance in decisions to face climate change and to build among all and all a greener and more sustainable agriculture, which respects ecosystems and biodiversity, for that it is fundamental also the work that Conaf develops in a great way in our region”.
The Nonguén National Park has an area of 3,055 hectares and is located twelve kilometers from Plaza Independencia de Concepción.
