Banking sector activated contingency plans during national power outage

The president of the Venezuelan Banking Association (ABV), Pedro Pacheco Rodríguez, informed the Banca y Negocios portal that all institutions activated their business continuity plans to manage the critical contingency during the power failure.


The national banking payment systems functioned normally in the midst of the national blackout that occurred this Friday, August 30, according to the portal Banking and Business in consultation with various sources in the financial system. The president of the Venezuelan Banking Association (ABV), Pedro Pacheco Rodríguez, said that all banks have a business continuity plan, given the situation presented in the service due to the power failure.

“This plan has been activated and in this sense we ratify the operation of the banks, both their main offices and their technological platforms,” ​​said Pacheco Rodríguez. consulted by the news portal.

He added that “the digital customer service channels are active. In the case of the network of offices, those affected by the unavailability of the electricity service are not operating.”

The president of the association recalled that in Venezuela 99.9% of banking transactions are carried out digitally and/or electronically, according to figures from the BCV, which implies that face-to-face channels process 0.9% of operations.

Sources consulted by Banking and Businessindicated that Banco de Venezuela (BDV) is providing normal service in those agencies where they have electricity, while its digital platform is 100% active for all services.

In the case of Mercantil Banco, it has 40% of active branches, Since these offices have power plants, the offices where electricity has been restored are also open, while the ATM network is active under normal conditions, with a lot of activity, indicated a source from the institution. The website is in normal conditions and 100% mobile services and mobile payment are available.

BBVA Provincial and Banco Exterior also reported complete normality in digital channels via web and mobile access, with points of sale 100% active. Likewise, where electricity has been restored, branches are operating normally.
