The United States Department of State granted the extradition of former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), requested by the justice of that country for corruption crimes, the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office reported on Tuesday.
“The Office of the Prosecutor of the Nation, as the central authority in matters of extraditions, informs that it has been learned that the Department of State of the United States of America granted the extradition of Alejandro Toledo Manrique, for the crimes of collusion and money laundering.” , detailed the Prosecutor’s Office on Twitter.
Alejandro Toledo Manrique (2001 – 2006) is being investigated by the Peruvian justice for allegedly having requested bribes of up to 35 million dollars from the Odebrecht company, in exchange for the construction company being favored in the bidding for the work of the Interoceanic highway, that unites that country with Brazil.
The former president used then-security chief Avi Dan On as a go-between in the deal, and pushed for the bribe. All the amounts requested by the former president totaled 20 million dollars, according to Jorge Barata, a former director of Odebrecht in Peru.
In this regard, the Office for International Judicial Cooperation and Extraditions of the National Prosecutor’s Office has been coordinating with national and foreign authorities for the upcoming execution of his extradition.
