Sanguinetti urged rural producers to arm themselves, questioned the Frente Amplio (FA) and claimed to have “ruined” what he described as “the party of left-wing disarmament.”
In his first message, Sanguinetti wrote: “Dear friends and colleagues rural producers, starting March 1, arm yourself to the teeth and have wild dogs. The FA is a friend of criminals, hunters, poachers, copiers, don’t be fooled, always go out with the 9 on your waist.” The call to bear arms comes a few weeks before the elected government, headed by Yamandú Orsi as president and Carolina Cosse as vice president, assumes command.
After receiving criticism for his publication, the leader responded: “Thanks to everyone who understood and encouraged me to move forward. Those who do not understand are left-handed people who pretend to be those who do not understand, is that understood? Good rest.”
In a third message, Sanguinetti assured: “There is no doubt that my post was ahead of the left-handed disarmament party. I’m sorry. I ruined their party! In my country, the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, no one sucks their thumb. Compass! Have a nice and restful rest.”
These statements sparked questions from various political sectors, which consider that the content of the publications promotes a divisive and potentially dangerous discourse at a time of democratic transition. There have still been no official statements from the Frente Amplio, although several coalition leaders have criticized the message through social networks.
