Animalists call to mobilize so that those of 2023 are the last riders

This Wednesday, from the 19th hourmembers of organizations animalists who demand that they stop being carried out horse riding in Uruguay will be concentrated in the main access to the Rural del Prado propertyon Lucas Obes avenue between Buschental and 19 de Abril.

There they will express, in different ways, that The development of an activity that in only 2022 and 2023 generated dozens of injured horses in each case, and the death of two equines up to now, must be canceled immediatelyreported to The Observer Rita Rodríguez, member of the NGO Trato Ético Animal, which in turn is part of the so-called Coordinator for the Abolition of Horse Riders in Uruguay (CAJU).

The intention of the organizations that call for the concentration is that the current one is the last edition of the jineteadas in Montevideo.

The mobilization is called by the two animalist blocks that bring together 90% of the organizations and activists against the jineteadas: CAJU and the Animalist Platform.

Following a request for reports, in February of this year the Municipality of Montevideo, organizer of the Criolla Week in the Prado, indicated that in 2022 720 mounts were carried out, with the participation of 489 horses, including foals and working horses.

The call for this Wednesday April 5th.

The NGO Trato Ético Animal understands that all the traditionalist activities of the Creole Week must continue, except for the horse ridingalluding to shows such as dances, antics and folklore, gastronomic activity, skill contests and craft and cultural activities, because in them there is no “promotion of violence”.

“The promotion of them and the highlighting of our best traditions brings us closer to a more just and noble society for all”, it is concluded in a draft municipal decree that on the subject of horse riding sent Ethical Animal Treatment in 2022 to the Departmental Board of Montevideo.

It establishes that “the department of Montevideo will not provide sponsorship, patronage or support of any kind to horse riding, dressage, Creole or similar that have horses or other animals as participants.”

Jineteada, in the Criolla Week organized by the Municipality of Montevideo.

It is also explained that “In the jineteadas we can see how the horse, which arrives tame at the palenque, is spurred on by the spurs so that it defends itself and shows its bravery, desperately trying to free itself from the one that hits it. This activity, which is based on the subjugation of an animal, in a performance of explicit violence, is classified as a spectacle and is officially encouraged..

In the aforementioned text, it is recalled, among other considerations, that “these shows imply the use of public resources” when a survey by Equipos Consultores revealed that “29% of Montevideans maintain that jineteadas should be prohibited” and that 59% consider that they must be regulated for animal welfare, “setting the pattern that what has been done so far is not considered sufficient.”
