An NGO waits for the "brokerage" of the Church for the release of Cuban political prisoners

“The situation is critical, a kind of perfect storm between government repression and famine.” The statement is made by the Cuban Observatory for Human Rights (OCDH), which expects “the mediation of the Cuban Catholic Church” for “the release of political prisoners, the end of repression and for the changes that the country urgently needs to take place.” “.

In its latest report, the Madrid-based organization reports at least 231 repressive actions during the month of April, of which 53 were “some type of detention.” The greatest number of abuses were suffered by political prisoners, says the OCDH. In addition, they point out “a high number of homes of activists raided by the political police, police summonses, harassment, assaults, travel impediments, fines and lawsuits.”

For its part, the Cuban Center for Human Rights (CCDH), directed by Martha Beatriz Roque, states in its most recent report a total of 582 detainees for the massive demonstrations of July 11, 2021 who are in prison.

Among them are 46 women and four minors: Alejandro Rosa la Fuente, 16 years old; Ruben Alejandro Parra Ricardo, 15; Llenson Enson Rizo, 14, and Giuseppe Belaunzarán Guada, 16.

They point out “a high number of homes of activists raided by the political police, police summons, harassment, assaults, travel impediments, fines and lawsuits”

The latter is a special case, since, sentenced to 10 years in prison, he was released, details the CCDH, “for being the grandson of a lieutenant colonel” of the Ministry of the Interior, Carlos Javier Guada.

From the list, it is noteworthy that 192 were sentenced to 10 years or more in prison, and that many of those who received long prison terms demonstrated in the Havana neighborhood of La Güinera, where on July 12 a policeman killed by back to Laurencio Tejada.

A witness to that crime, Roberto Pérez Ortega, was sentenced, for example, to 17 years in prison, after a cassation trial lowered the initial sentence of 25 years. He was sentenced to 23 years, from the same neighborhood, Ángel Hernández Serrano; at 22 years old, Dayron Martín Rodríguez –”psychiatric, depressive and suicidal patient”, says the NGO based in Cuba–, and Miguel alias The bald; to 18 years old, Eliéser Gordín Rojas (epileptic and asthmatic).

Those who suffer the greatest penalties, yes, demonstrated in Güines, Mayabeque, and are Lázaro Ramírez Lugo, sentenced to 30 years; José Alberto Oliva Arencibia, 27 years old, and Lázaro Jesús Piloto Campos, 25.
