robert cardozo embarked for 32 years. He started at 16 as an apprentice fisherman (boy) on coastal boats. Later he sailed on Spanish-flagged vessels that caught hake and on freezer ships. He was boatswain and chef. Then in 2019 she joined the board of the Single National Union of Sea and Allied Workers (Suntma) and recently retired. “Now I see a puddle and I dodge it,” she commented to The Observer.
Last year he began to organize some ideas that he had in his head, basically focused on social policies. He drafted them in a project and now he is advancing in the realization of a new political party.
“I was in the leadership of the union and they wanted me to stay. When I retired, I said that it was not appropriate because I wanted to set up a political party, ”he said. “Those of us who are in the project are some workers and other professionals. We have no ideology,” Cardozo said.
Now you are on the task of gather signatures to reach the 1,500 required by the Electoral Court to found a political party. The deadline to submit the required amount is five months before the next internal elections.
He recently held a meeting with the business representative on the Board of Directors of the Social Welfare Bank (BPS), José Pereyra, linked to the Un Solo Uruguay movement. “We brought the projects to him, they were accepted and we agreed to have another meeting. If they support, welcome. If not, it will be others, ”he said. Apart from that, he had no other contacts with politicians, parties or unions.

To bring some of the ideas down to earth, he developed a project. “The idea is that the issues enter into discussion, into debate. And if we can’t do it, someone else can do it,” Cardozo said.
One of the proposals that make up the plan is to promote the creation of a seawater treatment plant. The chosen area is Sayago Pointswhere the project to install a regasification plant was truncated.
“Without futurism, the issue of drought is going to get worse and worse. You have to have a state-of-the-art water treatment plant like there is in Israel or Turkey,” he said.
Another intention is the creation of a ministry of the sea, in which areas that are currently in the orbit of the Ministry of Livestock and the Environment are unified. One of the objectives is to have greater control over the fishing robberies that take place on the Uruguayan coast. “They steal from the Brazilian side, south of La Paloma; the Chinese steal in the south. And if they seize a boat, they put a fine on it, because it is classified as a misdemeanor. It has to be a crime, not a misdemeanor, ”he explained.
Another problem he pointed out occurs in the docking areas of container ships. “They throw lingas and buckets of paint into the sea, they pierce the oil tanks to pour it into the water. Later, when they arrive in Montevideo, they may take down some garbage, but 80% of it was thrown away beforehand. Then the fishing boats pass by and drag all that, ”he recounted.
A third point points to a further development of aquaculture with breeding of species and increase in food production.
