A tweet and the butterfly effect

A tweet and the butterfly effect

The butterfly effect is known as the result that can be produced by an action that is thought to be innocuous, but which nevertheless triggers a series of successive situations or actions, producing monumental changes, apparently not corresponding to the fact or element that perhaps started it. Something very common in political decisions, although sometimes we do not notice or dimension it. And this conversation could be a concrete case…

-Che, in the Senate they want to return the two lists, they say. They did not settle as they wanted so now they want to return.

-Return? How do I tweet? Don’t they realize that they don’t give the deadlines? The Concertación arrives, the 2023 elections. If they return, the entire selection process will be restarted and that is where the red-handed judges will interim.

-And you see chamigo

-Nooo! What the… give back. We are going to announce the votes of the bench as we agreed in the Driving team: Rossel and Bogarín. Call them to tell the play, tell them to poll their votes too.

We were days away from electing two Ministers of the TSJE, and the conversations in the legislative sphere revolved around that vote. With a tweet, from the official account of the Patria Querida Party, it was decided to make the vote of the bench (3 senators) public. Even when it seemed like a difficult and unpopular decision, without having any political affinity with the announced candidates, but understanding that they were given a vote of confidence for the conduct shown in their career. Without putting any conditioning other than courage and good faith in decisions.

At the beginning there were some attacks, questions as to why we were not in line with the return of both shortlists as some opposition spokesmen had been firmly stating.

It was difficult to deepen the analysis. However, the position remained firm and from this predictable position the scenario began to change. Apparently, initially they had those three votes to achieve the return of the list. However, when the tweet came out, the mathematics no longer closed. Since that announcement, the rest of the votes were cast and this led to the election of the current Ministers of the TSJE Rossel and Bogarín.

A little over a month after that tweet, the TSJE is facing a historic request: the use of the national register by the Concertación. Something that in the past was questioned and fought until the last instances by the Colorado ruling party. However, on the night of Friday, July 8, the big news arrived; With a solid foundation, the two new Ministers resolved in favor of the use of the register including all citizens. A 2 to 1 that marks a great milestone in favor of democracy.

A part of the Colorado ruling party announced that they would fight against the ruling, and then desist from said claim. Then the President’s side jumped in saying that they were in favor. They realized that fighting the ruling was going against the people… We are facing an idea whose time has come, a scenario that not even the most optimistic promoter of the Coalition would have imagined.

Behind a tweet, a political move that genuinely sought the right thing, which led to the election of two Ministers, who then made the right decision towards what we believe will be a historic event of citizen participation. Who knows? We can dream that that tweet establishing a position, tipping the balance, has been the preamble to the great butterfly effect of great transformations for the better that so many Paraguayans expect in 2023.
