The president of the Paraguayan Congress, the official Óscar Salomón, warned this Monday about the advance of organized crime in the country, when the National Constitution celebrates its 30th anniversary.

“Today we live in a worrying time with the undisguised advance of groups linked to organized crime, to large mafia corporations,” said Salomón, who is also head of the Upper House.

Speaking at an act to remember the enactment of the 1992 Magna Carta, the senator called on his colleagues to continue strengthening the social rule of law.

“We have the challenge of protecting the independence and freedom of our republic from those criminals to prevent our beloved country from being transformed into a narco-state at the service of transnational crime, money laundering and hired assassins,” he added.

“That never ever,” claimed the senator, who asked to claim “the validity of the legal order enshrined in June 1992.”

Regarding the Constitution, Salomón stressed that it protects the country “against any intention of domination, oppression and authoritarianism that seeks” to subject Paraguayans “whether at the whim of a person or a political group.”

He also stressed that the Constitution enshrines “ideological pluralism”, while dictating a “clear limitation to the exercise of power.”

This limitation, according to Salomón, protects Paraguayans “from populism, messianism or whoever believes himself to be all-powerful, be it because of his immense economic power, his political strength or the money generated in obscure activities.”

And in a context of the start of political campaigns ahead of the 2023 general elections, Salomón defended precisely the “dissemination of constitutional values”.
