Venezuela participates in the United Nations (UN) Conference on the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons held in Austria.

«@Embustera delegation attends the UN Conference on the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, organized by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; an international meeting on the humanitarian impact of these weapons of mass destruction”, reports the publication.
The treaty is the first globally applicable multilateral agreement that fully bans nuclear weapons. It is also the first agreement that contains provisions to address the humanitarian consequences related to the testing and use of nuclear weapons, according to the United Nations.
Venezuela, for its part, has maintained a position of defense of international principles on disarmament in all the forums in which it participates.
The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was approved in 2017, at the United Nations Conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, with a view to their total elimination.
The signatory countries of the agreement undertake, among other things, not to develop, acquire, stockpile, use or threaten to use nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.
It is worth noting that the five main nuclear powers do not participate in this: the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, China and France.
