Montevideo ranks second among the most expensive cities to live in Latin America, according to a study by the ECA International company. The capital of Uruguay is positioned only behind Buenos Aires.
The research was carried out in March of this year and analyzed the annual cost of consumer goods and services in different cities. Among the parameters used to compile the list are: average price of household staples —such as milk and cooking oil—, rent, utilities, public transportation and the strength of the local currency.

Buenos Aires is the most expensive city in Latin America, according to the annual list of ECA International. Below Buenos Aires are Montevideo (Uruguay), Panama City (Panama), Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
The vast majority of Latin American cities rose in the list of the most expensive of ECA International. The capital of Argentina went from position 92 in 2021 to position 37 in the ranking of the most expensive cities worldwide, a change of 55 positions. Montevideo was ranked 105th in the global ranking in 2021, and this year it went to number 85.
The most expensive city in the world is Hong Kong, followed by New York, Geneva, London and Tokyo.
