The president, Luis Lacalle Pou, referred for the first time to the separation with his wife Lorena Ponce de León, and said that sIt deals with “issues of a particular nature” that “in some way affect life after so many years”in an interview with Public Media.
“Loli is an excellent woman, a traveling companion for many years. She is an excellent mother, we have raised some very nice children”affirmed the president.
The separation was reported by The Observer the May 6thand implied the departure of Ponce de León from the presidential residence of Suárez y Reyes.
Since then, the couple had not made any statements about it, although they did they were seen together on May 10 in a Sembrando activitya social program for the Presidency headed by Ponce de León, held in the Executive Tower assembly hall.
Lacalle assured that “Like all Uruguayans, or like all people in the world, couple problems exist”and clarified that “what happens inside the couple is a private matter”.
