The Justice of Salto sentenced the departmental mayor of the Broad Front Roque Barla to 2 years and 8 months of effective prison as the author of a crime of aggravated sexual abuse towards a minor of 3 years, informed The Observer the spokesman for the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Javier Benech.
Barla, 60, accepted an abbreviated agreement in which he assumed his guilt after being denounced by the victim’s mother in October 2020. His defense appealed that, “for health reasons”, he serve his sentence under house arrest and that request will be studied once the corresponding documentation is presented to the judge.
In order for an abbreviated process to take place, it is necessary for the accused to acknowledge their participation in the events. In return, he receives a sentence up to a third less than what he could eventually obtain in an oral trial, but never less than the minimum established by the Code for the crime.
The investigation, which was initially directed by Beatriz Protesoni, is in charge of the prosecutor Martín Galliazzi after the prosecutor was transferred to San José.
