MIAMI, United States.- Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Monday that establishes a “Day of the victims of communism” in the state and requires that students learn about communism in schools.

According to a report from NBCMiamiDeSantis signed the bill designating November 7 as “Victims of Communism Day” at an event at the Freedom Tower in Miami.

DeSantis also announced that he had approved $25 million in funding for the preservation of the Freedom Tower, a historic landmark and important site for the Cuban exile community in Sun City.

“I think this tower is a reminder that freedom doesn’t come for free, that you have to fight for your rights and that there are a lot of people out there who would like nothing more than to subject you to some form of oppression,” DeSantis said.

Under House Bill 395, high school students in the US government class must receive at least 45 minutes of instruction on “Victims of Communism Day” beginning in the school year 2023-2024.

“We want to make sure that every year the people of Florida, but particularly our students, learn about the evils of communism, the dictators who have run communist regimes, and the hundreds of millions of people who have suffered and continue to suffer under the weight of this discredited ideology,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis also announced 26 new highway designations, including for three Cubans who fought against the Castro regime.

A project that started in 2021

Last year 2021 it was known that the Florida state legislature would hold legislative hearings to establish November 7 as “Commemorative Day for the Victims of Communism.” Florida thus joined 11 other states in recognizing VOC Day.

At the time it became known that the project required students to earn a half credit in a course that must include a discussion of political ideologies, such as communism and totalitarianism, that conflict with the principles of freedom and democracy essential to fundamental principles. from United States.

VOC Acting President and CEO Edwin J. Feulner praised the legislation: “We hope that Florida will become the 11th state to pass legislation establishing November 7 as ‘Victims of Communism Memorial Day.’ We need to remember the 100 million people who lost their lives at the hands of that system,” Feulner said in early March 2021.

“There is a growing need to educate America’s youth about the historical dangers and evils committed by communist regimes, especially with the growing ignorance about socialism in our country,” the official added.
