MIAMI, United States. — Lázara Karenia González, a 11J protester in the municipality of Cárdenas, Matanzas province, was released this Friday after more than nine months in detention, her sister Kirenia Wilhelm Benítez reported on social networks.

The 29-year-old was released after receiving a three-year sentence of correctional labor without internment.

“First of all, I want to thank Jehovah (God) for never letting go of our hands in these long nine months. To all our friends and family who, in one way or another, have supported us on the networks and in daily life, today our sister is home. On behalf of our family, thank you, thank you for so much,” she wrote on Facebook Lazara Karenia’s sister.

Cuban activist Salomé García Bacallao, member of the working group on arbitrary detentions Justice 11J, Indian that, despite the protester’s release, those responsible for her captivity remain under the protective cloak of the Cuban regime.

“Lázara Karenia is innocent and deserved acquittal, although today that does not diminish our joy at seeing her outside the Bellotex prison. The Cuban dictatorship has not offered any reparation for the damage they have caused her, nor the mistreatment she has suffered,” García Bacallao noted on Facebook.

In her complaint, the activist maintained that “none of the state agents who participated in her arrest has been held accountable for the serious abuses committed, despite being identified in the documents of the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic of Cuba.”

17 of the July 11 protesters in Cárdenas, including Lázara Karenia, were tried between March 15 and 18, 2022, according to information released by Justicia 11J.

Originally, the prosecutor’s request against the young woman was eight years in prison, finally exchanged for three years of correctional work without internment.
